Station 54 Joint-Staffing Program
Nevada City Fire Department Station 54 is one of three stations in the area that participate in the Joint-Staffing program with
Nevada County Consolidated Fire District (NCCFD). Through the program, Station 54 is able to be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week by a minimum of two firefighters. Previously, Station 54 was staffed with one firefighter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The previous duties of staffing were shared by two Full-Time Fire Apparatus Engineers from Nevada City Fire Department (NCFD).
The current arrangement divides the time among three Nevada County Consolidated Fire Apparatus Engineers, two Full-Time NCFD Fire Apparatus Engineers and one Full-Time NCFD Fire Captain working
a modified Kelly shift pattern. Each of the three shifts is staffed with one Nevada City employee and one Nevada County Consolidated employee.
Along with the increased personnel came an increased response area. Station 54 absorbed the response area of former NCCFD Station 85. In additon to the city limits of Nevada City, the response area now includes Banner Mountain to Greenhorn Creek,
Nevada City Highway to Skews Ln, Brunswick Road up to and including Greenhorn Road, the Nevada County Airpark, Loma Rica industrial area and a portion of Ridge Road.
As part of the agreement, Nevada County Consolidated Fire District has provided Engine 54 to respond to all Station 54 calls. Nevada City Fire Deparment still maintains
its fleet of apparatus to full response-ready status. On many occasions, NCFD apparatus has been used to cover Station 54 in event of emergency or mechanical problems.
The Joint-Staffing program provides a better response for the residents of Nevada City and surrounding area, along with many other benefits. The program has also
allowed NCFD members access to more training, additional equipment and greatly increased real-world experience. Joint staffing one station also allows Nevada City and Nevada County
Consolidated Fire District to better utilize tax dollars by combining resources.
